When you care for a patient who has a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC), change the dressing once a week if he currently has a transparent dressing or at least every 48 hours if it's a gauze dressing. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations and your facility's policy for changing the catheter stabilization device.
PICC TIPS:
Don't use any ointments at a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) insertion site. Clinical trials haven't established their effectiveness. Antibacterial ointment may actually increase colonization of fungi.
Change your patient's PICC dressing more frequently than the recommended intervals if it becomes soiled or damp or it's no longer intact.
Be creative when you position the PICC line on your patient's arm. For example, lifting and securing it on his upper arm helps prevent skin irritation and lets him conceal the catheter under a sleeve.
For added security after changing a PICC dressing, you may apply surgical or orthopedic netting over the entire dressing and catheter ends.
