How to Apply Adhesive IV Cannula Dressings

Proper dressing care protects IV sites, prevents infection and skin irritation. Follow the steps below:

Check the IV cannula is stable. Clean and dry the insertion site thoroughly, and remove all creams and moisture.

Prepare supplies: IV dressings, disposable gloves and antiseptic solution.

Wear disposable gloves to prevent contamination.

Remove the dressing backing without touching the adhesive side, then cover the insertion site and catheter hub completely.

Press and smooth the dressing to eliminate wrinkles and air bubbles.

Use extra dressings or tape to fix the tubing and prevent pulling on the IV site.

Document the operation information in the patient's medical files.
