Nasogastric feeding tube securement device
A nasogastric tube is inserted through the nose, into the stomach via the oesophagus for the purposes of:
a) Enteral feeding
b) Administration of medication
c) Gastric aspiration and decompression
Many nasogastric feeding tubes are inserted each day without incident. However, there is a small risk that a nasogastric tube can be misplaced during insertion or displaced after a successful insertion. Should misplacement occur and not be recognised serious harm could be experienced by the patient.
Application and Removal
Preparing the skin:
Wash patient's nose and cheeks with an mild soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Do not use and lotions or emollients as the oily residue will interfere with the adhesion of the barrier.
Use Steps:
1. Remove the release paper from the adhesive barrier .
2. Position the device so the clamp extends approximately 13mm below the tip of the nose. Apply the vertical centre of the barrier to the bridge of the patient’s nose, and press it down firmly, but gently, from the centre to the edges to ensure proper adhesion.
3. Secure the feeding tube by closing the arms of the device around it and squeeze the arms firmly. Note: The feeding Tube Securement Device should be monitored regularly to confirm barrier adhesion to the nose.
